Free Fantasy RPG Soulframe Opens Public PC Alpha on November 6
Soulframe, the long-awaited free-to-play fantasy RPG from Digital Extremes, is finally becoming available to all PC players through its public alpha test, Open Preludes, starting November 6. After years of development and limited access tests, players will no longer need an invite code, application approval, or Founder’s Pack purchase to jump in.
While this is exciting news for fans of open-world fantasy games, it is important to note that Soulframe is still in alpha. This is not the final version of the game, so players should expect an unfinished experience with possible bugs, balance changes, missing features, and evolving systems. Even so, Open Preludes gives PC gamers their first unrestricted opportunity to explore the game’s world, combat, story, and atmosphere.
Soulframe takes place in Midrath, a mysterious island being consumed by an industrial empire that is exploiting the land and its natural resources. Players take on the role of an Envoy, an ancient warrior connected to spirits, nature, and forgotten powers. The journey centers on restoring balance, defending the natural world, and pushing back against the forces that threaten it.
The game’s tone and visual style draw inspiration from fantasy classics such as Princess Mononoke and The NeverEnding Story. Its world blends dreamlike landscapes, spiritual themes, and environmental storytelling, creating a strong nature-focused identity that sets it apart from many traditional fantasy RPGs.
For players who enjoy games like The Elder Scrolls, Elden Ring, and The Witcher, Soulframe may be worth watching closely. It combines exploration, melee-focused combat, questing, crafting, character progression, and creature encounters in a fantasy setting designed around discovery and atmosphere. The game appears to lean more toward slower, weightier combat than Digital Extremes’ fast-paced Warframe, giving it a distinct personality.
The Open Preludes alpha will also bring new content and expanded features for players to try. One of the major additions is progression through the Veilands, an environmental system tied to exploration and advancement. Players will also be able to recruit an Omen Wolf mount, form a new character pact, and face Veltruska, a headless horseman-style miniboss.
Animal rescues, spiritual bonds, crafting, and exploration all play a role in shaping the Soulframe experience. Rather than focusing only on combat, the game aims to build a fantasy world where the relationship between the player, nature, and the spirit realm is central to the adventure.
Digital Extremes has not yet confirmed when the Open Preludes public alpha will end. For now, PC players interested in a free fantasy RPG with a rich world, challenging combat, and strong environmental themes will be able to experience Soulframe beginning November 6.
Although the game is still far from a complete release, this public alpha marks a major milestone. After several years of limited testing, Soulframe is finally opening its doors to a much wider audience, giving fantasy RPG fans a chance to see how this ambitious new world is taking shape.
