Former TikTok Executive Joins Fizz to Enhance Marketplace and Boost Recommendation System

Fizz, the dynamic college social app, is gearing up to revolutionize its platform, and the recent addition to its team is set to catalyze these dreams. Fizz has welcomed David Vasquez, the former head of creator monetization at TikTok, as its new head of product. With Vasquez’s expertise, Fizz aims to enhance its recommendation system, broaden its marketplace beyond peer-to-peer trades, delve deeper into video content, and explore advertising and brand partnerships.

Vasquez discovered Fizz while serving as a startup adviser, drawn by the app’s authentic, community-centered content and its impressive user retention rates. Reflecting on his decision to join Fizz, Vasquez noted the platform’s unique ability to maintain user engagement, which he sees as a crucial element for sustainable growth.

One major area Vasquez intends to focus on is the recommendation engine. By channeling lessons from TikTok’s success at delivering personalized content, Fizz aims to customize user experiences to keep them engaged. Vasquez envisions a system that not only showcases trending topics but also tailors content based on user interaction, such as surfacing more sports content for sports enthusiasts.

Moreover, Vasquez plans to expand Fizz’s peer-to-peer marketplace. Drawing from his experience with TikTok Shop, he understands Gen Z’s shopping preferences and plans to integrate payment systems within the app. This could transform marketplace interactions from basic direct messages to seamless transactions. Additionally, the incorporation of established e-commerce brands into the Fizz ecosystem is on the horizon, enhancing the diversity of available products.

In the realm of video, one of Vasquez’s initial moves was to extend video length from 15 to 30 seconds, resulting in a staggering 350% rise in video content creation. Given Gen Z’s penchant for video, Fizz is committed to expanding this component further, perhaps increasing the limit to a minute in the future, focusing on short, captivating videos.

With an eye on brand partnerships, Fizz is attracting interest from cutting-edge companies, including those in generative AI, looking to advertise on its platform. This strategic expansion has helped the app see a remarkable 245% increase in daily posts and a 61% rise in daily active users, partly fueled by uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s fate in the U.S.

Established in 2021, Fizz is now active in over 300 colleges and universities, boasting 18 million posts. Backed by $41 million in funding, the startup is poised for robust growth and innovation as it continues to capture the imaginations of college students nationwide.
