A PC builder recently discovered that a forgotten RAM purchase from early 2025 had turned into an unexpectedly valuable stash, thanks to the ongoing global memory shortage. What was once a $717 order for three premium G.SKILL Trident Z5 Royal Neo DDR5 kits is now worth several times more, with similar kits reportedly selling for over $1,000 each.
The owner, a Reddit user known as “jmg5,” had purchased three high-end G.SKILL Trident Z5 Royal Neo 8,000MT/s RAM kits earlier in the year and apparently left them at a vacation home. The post has since been deleted, but not before details of the hardware and pricing were shared.
Two of the kits were 32GB models, each originally bought for $214.99. The third was a larger 48GB kit, also rated at 8,000MT/s, purchased for $287. Altogether, the three kits cost $717 at the time.
The rediscovery happened when the owner visited the vacation home over the weekend with plans to build a new gaming PC powered by AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Instead of having to buy new DDR5 memory at today’s inflated prices, he realized he already had three premium RAM kits waiting for him.
That timing could not have been better. The memory market has seen sharp price increases as supply tightens and demand continues to rise, especially with AI-related buyers reportedly absorbing large portions of available memory shipments. As a result, regular PC builders and gamers are facing much higher prices for DDR5 kits that were far more affordable only months ago.
To put the price jump into perspective, a 32GB G.SKILL Trident Z5 Royal Neo 8,000MT/s kit can now be found listed for around $1,079.99 on major online marketplaces. That means the two 32GB kits alone could now cost more than $2,000 combined, while the 48GB kit may also command a significantly higher price than its original $287 purchase cost.
The Reddit user appeared to recognize just how fortunate the situation was. In the original post, he reportedly wrote “just to add to the pain,” suggesting he knew many PC enthusiasts were struggling to find reasonably priced memory. That may also explain why the post was later deleted. With so many buyers now facing inflated DDR5 prices, showing off multiple high-end kits bought before the shortage could easily feel like rubbing salt in the wound.
For PC gamers, system builders, and hardware enthusiasts, the story is a reminder of how quickly component prices can change. RAM is often treated as a routine purchase compared with graphics cards or processors, but the latest market conditions show that memory can become one of the most expensive parts of a build when supply dries up.
