Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave may already be in reviewers’ hands weeks before launch
Nintendo is set to spotlight Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave during a Nintendo Direct on August 4, but it looks like some critics may already be playing the upcoming Switch 2 exclusive well ahead of its release. According to a longtime ResetEra user, review copies were reportedly sent to select media outlets in late July, nearly six weeks before the game’s September 17 launch date.
If true, that is an unusually early window for a major first-party Nintendo title. It also raises an interesting question: why would Nintendo allow reviewers to access Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave so far in advance, especially when early leaks and spoilers are always a risk?
One likely answer is simple: the game may be massive.
Fire Emblem has a history of offering lengthy campaigns, branching storylines, and deep tactical systems that require serious time investment. Fire Emblem: Three Houses, released in 2019, could easily take more than 200 hours to fully complete across all four routes. If Fortune’s Weave follows a similar structure, reviewers may need several weeks to properly experience its story, characters, battles, and replay value.
The new entry is expected to feature Cain and three other central heroes, each with their own narrative path. That alone suggests the game could be built around multiple perspectives, extended campaigns, and meaningful choices. Add in strategic battles, character development, exploration between missions, and preparation phases, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave could become one of the most content-rich tactical RPGs on the Switch 2.
This early review access may also signal confidence from Nintendo. In recent years, many publishers have waited until the last possible moment to send review codes, especially for large or technically demanding games. Late review access often leads to rushed coverage, limited impressions, and concerns about performance or unfinished content.
By contrast, sending review copies more than a month before launch suggests that Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave may already be in a polished state. It could mean Nintendo is comfortable with the game’s quality and wants critics to have enough time to explore everything it has to offer before reviews go live.
Of course, early access comes with risks. Nintendo is known for being extremely protective of its games before release, especially when it comes to spoilers, leaked footage, and unauthorized impressions. A story-heavy tactical RPG like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave could be particularly vulnerable, since character reveals, plot twists, and route-specific events are a big part of the experience.
Still, Nintendo may believe the benefit outweighs the risk. Giving reviewers extra time could lead to more detailed, thoughtful coverage and stronger launch visibility. It also gives fans a reason to expect hands-on previews or early impressions following the August 4 Nintendo Direct.
For now, nothing has been officially confirmed about when reviews or previews will appear. But if reports are accurate, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is already being tested behind closed doors, and that could be a very good sign for fans eagerly waiting for the next big Fire Emblem adventure on Switch 2.
