Elon Musk’s platform X is gearing up to test a fresh approach to Community Notes, its crowdsourced fact-checking system. This new experiment aims to shine a light on popular posts from users with diverse viewpoints. The Community Notes X account revealed that a pilot test is underway, allowing select contributors to rate posts by answering specific questions about their likes and dislikes regarding particular content.
Much like the existing Community Notes fact-checking model, this system moves beyond simple upvotes and downvotes, which can easily be manipulated by groups with similar views. Instead, it employs a “bridging algorithm” that seeks to build consensus among individuals who typically hold differing opinions.
If users with contrasting perspectives agree on a fact-check’s accuracy, the note is published for public visibility. Although the system has faced criticism for being sluggish and struggling to manage the vast amounts of misinformation on the platform, the foundational idea has gained traction, even inspiring Meta to adopt a similar approach.
Now, X is exploring whether Community Notes can also help in identifying standout posts. Starting today, a select group of Community Notes contributors will notice a new feature when a post begins to gain significant attention through Likes. These contributors can rate and provide feedback, which helps the algorithm determine if the post is resonating well among users with varied opinions.
In a statement from the Community Notes account, the experiment is described as a means to highlight content that resonates widely. It notes, “People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes demonstrates that common ground can be found, even on divisive topics. This new feature aims to uncover ideas and insights that bridge perspectives.”
