Google has introduced a captivating new feature to Google Earth, allowing users to access historical Street View imagery. Previously, this time-traveling capability was exclusive to Google Maps, but now, people can explore past scenes and locales from both bird’s eye and street-level perspectives within Google Earth. This exciting update marks Google Earth’s 20th anniversary.
Last year saw a surge in social media of individuals using Google Maps to embark on virtual journeys through time—either to find loved ones or witness the evolution of familiar places. With this new feature, Google Earth now offers the same nostalgic experience, enhancing the platform’s versatility.
Alongside this nostalgic journey, Google is introducing AI-powered tools exclusively for U.S. professionals. These insights cover environmental data such as urban tree canopy coverage. In cities like Austin, Texas, users can pinpoint areas with dense tree coverage and identify regions that could benefit from cooling strategies. Additionally, land surface temperature data is available to guide urban planning initiatives.
In celebration of its two-decade journey, Google Earth delved into its own history. Launched in 2005, the platform quickly became a sensation, amassing 100 million downloads in just its first week. Recently, it was revealed that Google Earth facilitated over 2 billion searches in the past year, underscoring its lasting impact and popularity.
