ElevenLabs, a pioneering voice AI company, is opening new avenues for authors by allowing them to publish AI-generated audiobooks through its innovative Reader app. This marks a significant step forward following the company’s recent partnership with Spotify for AI-narrated audiobooks.
In an impressive move, ElevenLabs raised a staggering $180 million in funding last month, enabling the rollout of a publishing program initially tested with select authors. With this initiative now accessible to all authors, the company is poised to revolutionize how audiobooks are created and distributed.
The goal is clear: make audiobook production affordable and accessible, breaking away from the traditionally high costs associated with studio recordings. Unlike Audible, which offers lower royalty rates, ElevenLabs aims to offer more favorable terms to authors. Authors will be compensated when listeners engage with their content, receiving approximately $1.10 when an audiobook is played for 11 minutes or more.
During its testing phase, ElevenLabs observed users spending an average of 19 minutes per session on its app. While these rates are competitive, the company anticipates adjustments as the program evolves. Initially, this payout structure will be available for English titles in the United States, with plans to expand to 32 additional languages in the future.
Additionally, ElevenLabs envisions creating a dynamic marketplace for authors to sell their works, further expanding their publishing capabilities. By utilizing ElevenLabs’ AI technology, authors and publishers can generate audiobooks under various subscription plans, ranging from $11 to $330 per month. This option offers significant savings compared to traditional studio and voice actor costs.
Already, platforms like Pocket FM and Kuku FM have leveraged ElevenLabs’ technology to transform text into engaging audio content. Now, ElevenLabs aims to cement its place as a vital platform for indie content, aligning with CEO Mati Staniszewski’s vision of expanding into consumer-focused experiences.
This innovative approach is set to change the landscape of audiobook publishing, offering authors a cost-effective and efficient way to share their stories with the world.
