TikTok may have made its way back to the U.S. digital arena for now, but its future isn’t set in stone. Amid this uncertainty, an innovative tool named Dewey has stepped in to offer a lifeline for TikTok aficionados. Dewey provides a bookmarking backup service that allows users to preserve their cherished TikTok videos, ensuring access even if the app faces another setback.
Originally launched in May 2021 to help users manage their Twitter bookmarks, Dewey has rapidly evolved. The service now encompasses an array of social media platforms including Bluesky, Threads, LinkedIn, Truth Social, and even your browser bookmarks. Dewey’s expansion plans also aim to include support for Reddit and Instagram.
This sudden pivot towards TikTok came as the app faced potential shutdowns. Though a reprieve was granted, allowing TikTok to extend its U.S. operations by 75 days as of January 19, the question of its long-term fate lingers. Discussions revolve around whether TikTok will attempt a joint venture with U.S. ownership or possibly withdraw from the American market if it can’t sustain its current model.
In light of the turmoil, Tom Harari, co-founder of Dewey, mentioned that the team swiftly developed a contingency plan for TikTok users eager to secure their video bookmarks. Launching over the weekend, this new feature marks Dewey’s debut in supporting a video-centric social network.
With the latest feature, Dewey users can effortlessly import their TikTok Favorites and Collections into their feed within the app. This capability ensures that videos remain saved indefinitely — or at least as long as Dewey is around. For enhanced organization, TikTok Collections are neatly categorized into separate folders within Dewey’s interface.
This development comes on the back of other enhancements, such as integrating with platforms like Threads and Truth Social and introducing features like date-based filtering, data exporting, and support for Markdown export. These features allow users to link their bookmarks with tools such as Obsidian, a popular writing application.
Dewey is available for free with one account, while premium plans, starting at $7.50 per month, offer enhanced functionalities such as unlimited account backups, automatic syncing, and advanced searching capabilities. Currently, Dewey boasts over 40,000 users with 1,500 subscribing to the paid service.
Co-founded by Alex Prober, Dewey initially thrived as a bootstrapped venture before receiving an infusion of investment from a patron supportive of profitable SaaS enterprises. Dewey continues to innovate and adapt, offering valuable solutions in a landscape where digital uncertainties persist.
