MicroProse and developer Terrible Toybox have locked in the console release date for Death By Scrolling, their fast-paced vertically scrolling RPG with roguelike progression and a heavy dose of underworld humor.
Death By Scrolling launches on Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5 on April 16. PC players aren’t being left behind, either: a free update arrives the same day, adding a new playable character, a brand-new biome to race through, and multiple gameplay improvements designed to make each run smoother, smarter, and more chaotic in the best way.
Originally released for Windows PC in October 2025, Death By Scrolling drops you into the unruly depths of Purgatory, now “under new management,” where survival isn’t just about fighting monsters—it’s about beating the screen itself. The world constantly scrolls upward, meaning there’s no time to pause, camp, or play it safe. Fall behind and the fiery edge of the screen catches you, ending the run.
At the center of every attempt is a simple, painful goal: collect enough wealth to pay the Ferryman’s outrageous fee of 10,000 gold. To get there, you’ll pick from a varied cast of characters, each with unique perks and abilities that can dramatically change how you approach combat, movement, and risk. Along the way you’ll snatch up gold and precious gems, then decide how to spend them on upgrades, power-ups, and new capabilities—often through quirky vendors who appear mid-run.
Of course, Purgatory doesn’t let you grind in peace. The Grim Reaper is always on your heels. You can outmaneuver him, stun him, and dodge your way out of trouble, but you can’t remove him from the equation. That constant pressure turns every level into a frantic puzzle: fight off strange underworld creatures, weave around hazards, and make split-second choices about whether to chase loot or sprint for your life.
Between monster battles and demonic bosses, the game also mixes in bonus challenges and oddball side quests that appear at the top of each level, offering extra rewards for players willing to take on more danger. Add in playful narration, cheeky dialogue, and a satirical take on afterlife bureaucracy, and Death By Scrolling aims to keep its tone light even when the action gets brutal.
For competitive players, leaderboards add one more reason to push for cleaner runs and better decisions—because in Purgatory, bragging rights are also a kind of currency.
With its console debut arriving April 16 and a substantial free PC update landing the same day, Death By Scrolling is positioning itself as a chaotic, replayable roguelike RPG where the real boss is time, the screen won’t wait, and death is always just a step behind.
