Cursor Launches Origin, a Built-In GitHub Alternative for Code Hosting and Pull Requests
Cursor has introduced Origin, a new code hosting and pull request platform built directly into its AI-powered code editor. The feature is now available in early beta for paid users, giving developers a way to manage repositories, review code, and handle pull requests without leaving the Cursor environment.
The launch arrived on the same day GitHub experienced a major service disruption, making the timing especially noticeable for developers who rely heavily on cloud-based code hosting. While product rollouts are often planned well in advance, Origin’s debut highlights a growing demand for smoother, more integrated development workflows.
Origin appears inside Cursor through a new Codebase tab. From there, developers can browse repositories, review diffs, leave comments, and merge pull requests directly within the editor. This reduces the need to jump between a coding tool, a browser, and a separate repository platform.
One of Origin’s biggest advantages is how closely it connects with Cursor’s AI features. Since the codebase, pull requests, and AI agents all exist in the same workspace, users can ask questions about a repository, request code changes, or have Cursor create and push a new branch. For teams already using Cursor as part of their daily workflow, this could make code review and collaboration feel much faster.
For now, Origin is not positioned as a complete GitHub replacement. Existing GitHub repositories can be synced into Cursor, while GitHub continues to act as the main source of truth. Any changes pushed from Cursor are routed back to GitHub, and synced repositories and pull requests update in both directions in real time.
Cursor is also expanding Origin with third-party integrations. Support for tools such as Vercel, Depot, and Buildkite is already available, helping teams manage previews, continuous integration, and existing GitHub Actions workflows.
The early beta is available to paid Cursor users, except for enterprise organizations that have opted out. As Origin develops, it could become an important part of Cursor’s broader push to turn the code editor into a complete development hub.
By combining AI coding assistance, repository management, pull requests, and CI integrations in one place, Cursor Origin aims to simplify the software development process and reduce context switching for developers. If the platform continues to grow, it may become a serious option for teams looking for a more streamlined alternative to traditional code hosting workflows.
