Creating a Bluesky Starter Pack: Transforming Ideas into a Compelling List

A new feature for Bluesky, a rising contender in the social media space, offers a streamlined way to create personalized feeds and pin them to your app’s homepage, catering to your varied interests. If the idea of reconstructing your old Twitter or X lists on Bluesky seems overwhelming, the Pack2List web app is here to help. It allows you to leverage the curated efforts of fellow Bluesky users, making it easy to craft customized lists in no time.

Bluesky already has a host of tools available for compiling feeds, lists, and even Starter Packs—curated collections of users deemed worth following. However, Pack2List simplifies this process by transforming any user’s recommended list from their Starter Pack into a Bluesky List in just a few easy steps.

Understanding Starter Packs and Lists:

So what’s the difference between a Starter Pack and a Bluesky List? A Starter Pack serves as a quick-start guide, enabling users to follow a batch of users at once. Any Bluesky user can create a Starter Pack of recommended people to follow and share it with others both within and outside the platform. These packs are accessible via a tab on users’ profiles, serving as an innovative way to expand Bluesky’s community organically—important for a newcomer lacking the massive user base of platforms like Instagram that leverage existing networks.

Starter Packs span a variety of interests, from politics and journalism to sports, technology, and niche community groups, making it easier for newcomers to populate their timelines with engaging content.

In contrast, a Bluesky List is a personalized collection of accounts created for your monitoring purposes. This could range from a list of friends and colleagues to favorite scientists or authors. You might even compile a block list to maintain a serene experience on Bluesky. Unlike Starter Packs that drive followers, Bluesky Lists can display posts from listed users in a separate timeline without cluttering your main feed.

Transforming a Starter Pack into a List:

While both Starter Packs and Bluesky Lists enhance the user experience, there’s a missing feature for converting a shared Starter Pack directly into a Bluesky List. Enter Pack2List, a web tool that bridges this gap.

Available on GitHub, Pack2List requires your Bluesky username and an app-specific password (generate this from Bluesky’s security settings for added protection). Upon entering the URL of a desired Starter Pack, you can choose to create a List for following or for moderation purposes. With a simple click, the Pack becomes a List, instantly accessible on your Bluesky account. You can also merge this with existing Lists if desired.

Though tech tools like Pack2List enhance Bluesky’s functionality, they’re not necessary for enjoying the platform’s core features. Even without these, Bluesky provides a user-friendly experience reminiscent of the early days of Twitter. However, for those inclined to explore Bluesky’s full potential, the vibrant developer community is continually crafting new tools and apps to enrich your social media journey.
