Crafting a Dual-Screen E-Reader That Feels Like a Real Book

E-reader displays have long been touted as the perfect paper alternative, but they often fall short in replicating the true feel of a book, with their single-page imitation resembling a pamphlet more than a novel. Enter an innovative solution: a dual-screen e-reader that mimics the traditional book experience by folding open to reveal two pages.

This ingenious concept comes from Reddit user Spacerower, who embarked on this project after damaging their old e-reader and failing to find a suitable replacement. Determined to bring their vision to life, they crafted a dual-screen device powered by an ESP32S-3 chip, featuring two 5.83-inch e-paper displays. Each display is backed by a 1,300 mAh battery, ensuring long-lasting use.

E-paper displays are lauded for their minimal power requirements. Pair this with the efficient ESP32-S3 chip, which offers a 7 µA deep sleep mode, and you get a device capable of lasting over a month on a single charge. Additional features include an SD card slot for content storage, physical buttons for easy navigation, and a USB-C port for charging.

Despite its slim design—measuring 8 mm thick on each side and 16 mm when closed—the dual-screen setup adds the bonus of protecting the displays without the need for an extra case.

Currently, the software is basic, as the creator notes, relying on custom coding for ePUB parsing, text rendering, and user interface. While there’s room for improvement, this project represents a fascinating step forward in making e-readers that truly reflect the tactile joy of reading a real book.
