In a recent twist within the Destiny 2 universe, the Desert Perpetual raid event has been overshadowed by allegations of widespread cheating. As players gathered to tackle this challenging raid in celebration of the new The Edge of Fate expansion, accusations emerged involving a significant number of top-performing teams resorting to exploits.
For those unfamiliar, the Desert Perpetual event offers enticing rewards such as belts and emblems to teams that complete it swiftly. While some adventurers found the difficulty overwhelming, others breezed through suspiciously fast, raising eyebrows and fueling speculations of foul play.
Statistics indicate that around 70% of the top 100 teams might have engaged in cheating. Observers noted signs such as unrealistically low completion times and disproportionate kill counts, often with one player dominating the stats. A significant number of heavy weapon kills also attracted scrutiny, with these powerful weapons seemingly used excessively.
At the heart of these exploits lies “net limiting,” a tactic where players manipulate their internet connections to deal increased damage. Weapons like Lorentz and Duality were spotlighted as tools amplifying these effects, giving these teams an unfair advantage.
In response to the community’s outcry, Bungie has vowed to investigate the situation and urged players to report any infractions. Cheating is not an entirely new issue for Destiny 2, with many pointing to October 2023 as a turning point when these activities became more rampant. This coincided with significant layoffs at Bungie, including key members of the Player Security team, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current anti-cheat measures in the absence of human oversight.
Amid these challenges, Bungie is also grappling with player dissatisfaction regarding the value of the $40 Edge of Fate DLC, criticized for repetitive gameplay after eight years since the base game launched. The anticipation for the upcoming Marathon remains dampened with its release now postponed indefinitely.
As the community waits for Bungie’s next steps, the integrity of Destiny 2’s competitive environment hangs in the balance, with many hoping for swift and decisive action to restore fair play in future events.
