TikTok is making waves once again, but this time it’s not about trending videos or viral challenges. The social media giant is reportedly streamlining its workforce, particularly in Malaysia, with hundreds of employees affected. These strategic layoffs are part of TikTok’s broader shift to bolster its content moderation through advanced AI technology.
While TikTok has not pinpointed an exact figure, the company assured that fewer than 500 individuals are impacted by this decision. The move is part of an initiative to enhance its global operations, blending automated systems with human oversight to better manage the content users post on the platform.
Earlier this year, TikTok embarked on other rounds of workforce reductions. April saw over 250 positions eliminated in Ireland, while reports from May suggested about 1,000 staff from its operations and marketing divisions faced layoffs. Additionally, in January, the company reduced its sales and advertising team by 60 employees.
This restructuring reflects TikTok’s commitment to creating a more efficient and effective content moderation strategy, as the platform increasingly leans on automation to meet its evolving needs. While it is a challenging period for those impacted, it’s a strategic pivot for TikTok as it navigates its place in the fast-paced world of social media.
