Bluesky Introduces Mentions Feature and Username Squatting Shield

Bluesky has rolled out an exciting new update that’s set to enhance user experience on its platform. The updated app now features a separate mentions tab within notifications, providing users a more streamlined way to engage with their interactions. Previously, all notifications were housed under a single tab, making it difficult to track specific mentions. This update, with its v1.96 release, promises to address this by distinctly categorizing notifications.

Additionally, Bluesky is tackling the issue of username squatting, which has been a significant concern. By reserving your original Bluesky username (suffix .bsky.social) when you opt for a custom domain, the platform ensures that your identity remains protected. However, it’s important to note that only the most recent Bluesky username will be reserved, and there’s no expiration for these reservations. This move comes in the wake of challenges faced by the platform, where impersonators have attempted to snatch domain names, mimicking identities of notable individuals who aren’t yet on Bluesky.

In terms of user interaction, Bluesky is offering greater flexibility with the way replies are displayed under posts. Users can now toggle between linear and threaded view options and employ various filters—such as hottest, oldest, newest, most-liked, and random—to sort through replies, making conversations more accessible and easier to manage.

Not stopping at these features, Bluesky is expanding its reach by supporting more languages. With the addition of Nepali, Khmer, and Romanian, it’s evident that the platform is committed to creating an inclusive space for a growing global audience. Exciting times lie ahead as Bluesky continues to innovate and enhance its social networking experience, catering to over 25 million users worldwide.
