The Ayaneo Pocket S2 has truly proven its resilience after a grueling 100-hour stress test. This handheld device showed impressive thermal management, maintaining surface temperatures under 45°C and internal temperatures below 75°C, even when put to the test with demanding Nintendo Switch emulations. With the fan set to “High,” rather than “Max,” it achieved stable performance, with no thermal throttling recorded and consistent CPU/GPU frequencies.
Despite navigating the challenges typical of early-stage emulation, such as minor frame drops in Super Mario Sunshine and visual artifacts in newer games like Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D Remake, these issues are more linked to the development of emulators rather than the device itself.
Remarkably, the Pocket S2’s build quality stood firm. The hall effect sticks, face buttons, and replaceable D-pad showed no signs of material degradation. Its aluminum chassis remained free from heat-related discoloration or warping. The LCD screen, despite its 60Hz limitation, continued to be responsive and accurate in color, even after extended use in high-brightness mode.
Some minor wear was detected, though, with micro scuffs appearing on the soft plastic shell around the triggers. Additionally, frequent swapping of third-party caps might lead to a slight squeak in the right analog stick.
