Apple is quietly building a ChatGPT-style assistant to reinvent Siri, and it could be the company’s most important AI move in years. According to a new report, the project—codenamed Veritas—isn’t meant for a flashy public debut. Instead, it’s an internal training ground where Apple’s engineers can experiment with a smarter, more conversational assistant and figure out how to make Siri truly useful in complex, real-world conversations.
Rather than launching a public chatbot, Apple is using Veritas to test how its large language model tech handles natural, multi-turn dialogue. The goal is to push Siri beyond simple commands and turn it into an assistant that understands context, follows up intelligently, and reasons through open-ended questions—capabilities users now expect from tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. This isn’t a surface-level refresh either. Apple is reportedly rebuilding key foundations, using its in-house AI models to support longer conversations, better context retention, and deeper integration with apps and services across the Apple ecosystem.
Don’t expect to download Veritas any time soon. The company is said to have no plans to release it as a standalone chatbot, avoiding a direct showdown with existing AI heavyweights. Instead, the insights gathered from Veritas will shape a major Siri upgrade expected to arrive with a future iOS release next year.
There’s a compelling case for Apple to make a public version, though. A dedicated AI chatbot from Apple would signal a stronger presence in the rapidly evolving AI space, counter the mixed perception surrounding Apple’s recent AI push, and move the company closer to its long-rumored ambitions in search. For many users, a focused, always-available chatbot is a powerful productivity tool—something they may prefer alongside Siri’s system-level capabilities.
