Apple Pencil 2027 Upgrade Could Bring a Big Repairability Change: Replaceable Batteries
Apple may be preparing one of the most practical Apple Pencil upgrades yet. A new report claims the company plans to launch two refreshed Apple Pencil models in the first half of 2027, likely alongside its next-generation iPad lineup.
The update would arrive roughly three years after Apple introduced the USB-C Apple Pencil and about two years after the debut of the Apple Pencil Pro. While new creative features are always expected from Apple’s stylus lineup, the biggest change this time may be less about drawing performance and more about long-term usability.
According to the report, Apple is working on two new models. One is said to be an updated version of the more affordable USB-C Apple Pencil, internally identified as B582. The other, reportedly code-named B632, is expected to refresh the Apple Pencil Pro.
The current Apple Pencil Pro includes premium features such as a squeeze-sensitive barrel, haptic feedback, and advanced controls for artists, designers, note-takers, and iPad power users. However, the next version may focus on something many users have wanted for years: easier repairs.
The key change could be a battery design that is easier to remove and replace. That would be a major shift for the Apple Pencil, as previous models have been difficult or nearly impossible to repair once the internal battery begins to wear out. For many users, battery degradation eventually means replacing the entire stylus rather than simply swapping in a new battery.
This possible redesign appears to be influenced by upcoming European Union rules requiring consumer electronics to use batteries that are easier to remove and replace. These regulations are pushing major tech companies to rethink how they design devices, especially smaller accessories that have traditionally been sealed shut.
Apple has already made design changes in response to European regulations. One of the most notable examples was the move from Lightning to USB-C on the iPhone 15 series in 2023. Now, the Apple Pencil could be next in line for a more repair-friendly redesign.
If Apple does introduce a replaceable battery in the next Apple Pencil Pro, it could make the accessory more appealing to buyers who keep their iPads and accessories for several years. A repairable battery would extend the life of the stylus, reduce electronic waste, and potentially lower long-term ownership costs.
The change could also strengthen Apple’s position among digital artists and students, two groups that often rely heavily on the Apple Pencil every day. For users who sketch, annotate documents, edit photos, or take handwritten notes, a longer-lasting and easier-to-maintain stylus would be a meaningful improvement.
Apple is not the only company adjusting its hardware plans because of Europe’s battery rules. Nintendo has also announced updated European versions of the Switch 2 and several accessories designed around user-replaceable batteries. Replacement battery kits are expected for select controllers and accessories in Europe, showing how the new regulations are already influencing product design across the tech industry.
For Apple, the 2027 Apple Pencil refresh could mark a turning point. Instead of focusing only on new gestures, sensors, or creative tools, the company may finally address one of the biggest weaknesses of its stylus lineup: repairability.
If the report proves accurate, the next Apple Pencil models could offer a better balance of performance, sustainability, and long-term value. For iPad users, that may be just as important as any new drawing feature.
