Apple has just launched iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1, delighting iPhone and Apple Watch users with the long-awaited return of Blood Oxygen Monitoring in the United States. This feature re-emerges after a prolonged patent tussle with health tech company Masimo, marking a significant update for Apple enthusiasts.
For those eager to upgrade, downloading iOS 18.6.1 is a breeze. Simply navigate to the Settings app on your iPhone, go to General, then Software Update, and follow the prompts. Since this is a final release, there’s no need for a developer account.
On the Apple Watch side, ensure your device has more than 50% battery life and is connected to a power source before you proceed. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, head to General, and tap on Software Update to begin the installation. Remember, your watch must be within range of your phone for the update to initiate.
This update is particularly noteworthy because Blood Oxygen Monitoring had been removed in 2024 due to a legal dispute. Now, it’s back with a twist. Although you can’t view the readings directly on your Apple Watch, the device will capture data and send it to your paired iPhone. You’ll then find your oxygen levels in the Health app under the Respiratory section.
While Apple has not highlighted other improvements or bug fixes in this release, the return of Blood Oxygen Monitoring is a significant development. Stay tuned for more updates as they unfold in this health feature.
