AMD’s newest FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaler, FSR 4, has quickly built a reputation for noticeably better image quality than earlier versions. The frustration for many PC gamers isn’t whether FSR 4 can run on older Radeon cards—it’s that AMD still won’t officially bring it to them, even though the community has already shown it working on previous generations.
Over the past several months, multiple user tests have demonstrated that FSR 4 can be enabled on older RDNA graphics cards, including RDNA 2 (RX 6000 series) and RDNA 3 (RX 7000 series). These results weren’t theoretical. Workarounds using leaked files made it possible to switch on FSR 4 on hardware AMD hasn’t officially supported. When an INT8 DLL tied to FSR 4 surfaced previously, it was quickly picked up by enthusiasts and used to get the new upscaler running beyond RDNA 4.
What makes this situation more compelling is the visual improvement people are seeing. Comparisons between FSR 3.1 and FSR 4 on RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 have shown a clear uplift in image quality, with cleaner output and a more modern look overall. The catch is performance. The INT8 flavor of FSR 4 appears to come with a meaningful performance hit on older GPUs. Still, users found that by switching to FSR 4 Performance mode, they could often land around the same performance they’d get with FSR 3.1 Quality—while enjoying the better visuals of FSR 4.
Naturally, that raised the big question: if an INT8 version exists and works, will AMD release FSR 4 support for older RDNA GPUs in an official capacity?
When asked about the status of FSR 4 (specifically the INT8 path) for previous-generation RDNA cards, AMD didn’t confirm anything. The company’s response was simple: “No updates to share at this time.”
That non-answer leaves gamers stuck in limbo. It’s already understood that RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 lack native FP8 instructions, which are needed for the FP8 implementation of FSR 4. But that’s exactly why the INT8 build matters—because it suggests AMD has already explored an alternative that can function on hardware without FP8 support. Without an official release, though, users are left relying on unofficial methods, which can be inconvenient, inconsistent, and risky for mainstream players who just want dependable driver-level features.
The broader concern is how GPU buyers perceive long-term support. Many gamers see upscaling and frame-generation technology as essential PC gaming features today, especially at higher resolutions where performance demands are steep. If the newest improvements remain locked to the newest hardware—despite proof that older cards can run them—some players may interpret that as an unnecessary limitation.
For now, the community has shown that FSR 4 on RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 isn’t a fantasy, but AMD still hasn’t committed to making it a supported option. Until that changes, many Radeon owners will keep asking the same thing: if it works, why not release it and let users decide whether the performance trade-off is worth the visual upgrade?
