AMD is gearing up to tackle the noise issue in path-traced frames with its own sophisticated technologies in neural supersampling and denoising. Following in the footsteps of NVIDIA, AMD is reportedly developing AI-based denoising techniques that could revolutionize the gaming experience by enhancing visual quality in demanding scenes.
NVIDIA has already made significant strides with its upscaling techniques, addressing the performance challenges in modern video games that incorporate ray tracing. AMD and Intel have since entered the fray with their own unique upscaling solutions, such as AMD’s FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) and Intel’s XeSS (Xe Super Sampling).
This year, AMD introduced FSR 3.1, which showcases improvements in stability over its predecessors. However, there remains a challenge in effectively denoising visuals in path-traced images. While NVIDIA’s Ray Reconstruction, powered by its Tensor Cores, has set a high benchmark, AMD relies on in-game denoisers. Although these denoisers perform adequately, they pale in comparison to NVIDIA’s more advanced AI-driven solutions.
In its pursuit of innovation, AMD announced it is actively researching neural methods for Monte Carlo denoising, aiming for real-time path tracing on its RDNA™ GPUs. This development suggests that AMD is working on an AI-based technique to deliver enhanced visuals and denoising for RDNA-based GPUs. What remains unclear is whether these advancements will be compatible with current and prior generations of RDNA GPUs, or if they will be exclusive to the anticipated RDNA 4 series.
Furthermore, AMD highlighted the capability of its new technique to replace multiple denoisers used across various lighting effects, streamlining the denoising process into a single, low-resolution pass. This streamlined approach may expand compatibility across platforms, potentially offering some level of interoperability with NVIDIA and Intel GPUs, though optimized for performance on RDNA GPUs.
