AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, has high hopes for the burgeoning “AI supercycle.” She believes that AMD is well-prepared to meet the increasing market demand by speeding up its product roadmap.
As we look over the AI market landscape, it’s clear that AMD stands as a significant contender alongside NVIDIA. The company’s expanded AI portfolio has caught the attention of big-name clients like Microsoft and Amazon. While AMD might not yet match NVIDIA’s success, the optimism within AMD continues to grow, with Su emphasizing that the AI boom is just beginning.
Lisa Su remarked, “We have accelerated our AI roadmap and are on a one-year cadence of new products. It is an AI supercycle. AI is a much larger cycle than I would have expected five years ago. We are making big bets now for the next five years.”
This year, AMD has already revealed plans to speed up their AI development cycle, aiming for yearly updates. The upcoming “Advancing AI” event is set to spotlight the next-generation Instinct MI325X AI accelerator, and the flagship Instinct MI300 series scheduled for next year is highly anticipated, especially the MI350.
AMD is certainly stacking the decks with impressive advancements, though there seems to be a gap when compared to NVIDIA’s forthcoming Blackwell architecture.
However, AMD’s MI300 portfolio has been the fastest-growing product in the firm’s history, with massive adoption rates this year alone. The company foresees revenue reaching up to $4.5 billion in 2024, an increase of $500 million from previous forecasts. The biggest play for AMD appears to be their next-gen MI400 Instinct lineup, which promises advanced capabilities that could rival NVIDIA’s offerings.
Moreover, AMD announced the integration of its consumer and data center architectures into a single unit named “UDNA.” This strategic move is aimed at expediting development across both platforms, enabling AMD to enhance its software offerings, like the ROCm software stack, potentially competing on par with NVIDIA’s CUDA. With these developments, AMD is gearing up for a significant breakthrough.
