AllTrails, a beloved app for hiking and biking enthusiasts and named 2023’s iPhone App of the Year, is unveiling a new premium membership called “Peak.” Priced at $80 annually, this subscription introduces a suite of advanced features designed to enhance your outdoor adventures. With AI-driven tools, it enables users to create custom routes and offers real-time trail condition forecasts, trail traffic heatmaps, and a tree and plant identification feature via your phone’s camera.
The rollout for this new offering is set to begin in the coming weeks for select users, with a global launch anticipated by June. Those eager for early access can pre-register on the app’s website.
AllTrails gained significant traction in 2021, raising $150 million as people sought solace in nature during pandemic lockdowns. However, Apple stepped into the scene soon after, integrating topographic maps and trail features directly into Apple Maps, posing a challenge to AllTrails’ market hold.
In response, AllTrails is empowering its most dedicated users with a fresh set of features. Notably, Peak membership offers AI-powered smart-routing. This allows you to craft your perfect trail by adjusting existing ones—making them shorter, less steep, or enhancing scenic qualities.
The new trail conditions forecast delivers comprehensive weather insights like temperature, precipitation, and snow depth, effectively embedding a weather app within AllTrails. It also includes alerts for air quality and mosquito activity. Future updates will incorporate terrain details like pavement and mud conditions.
The heatmap feature promises to be a boon for both solitude seekers and those who prefer safer, busier trails. It leverages data from millions of users’ activities to predict trail traffic, much like how Google Maps estimates peak times at various venues.
This summer, Peak members will also benefit from the Outdoor Lens feature, which allows instant identification of trees, plants, and flowers with the app. More identification capabilities are expected to be added over time.
In addition to Peak, AllTrails is enhancing its Base and Plus memberships. The free Base version includes trail maps and community reviews, while Plus offers offline access, wrong-turn alerts, 3D trail previews, and live activity sharing.
Both subscriptions will gain a Points of Interest feature, adding over 500,000 detailed viewpoints, landmarks, and trail amenities. Plus subscribers will also enjoy the Offline Area feature, enabling them to download customized, high-resolution maps for offline exploration.
