A new e-ink display, the TRMNL, is now available and offers an affordable solution for various smart home applications. This display comes with a built-in battery, eliminating the need for a nearby power source. It has been introduced as the TRMNL 7.5-inch DIY kit and can be preordered at Seeed Studio.
This e-ink display comes equipped with a pre-installed circuit board designed to display a range of information such as sensor data, calendars, or weather updates, making it ideal for smart home environments where frequent content updates aren’t necessary. The screen can maintain static content for extended periods; for example, if refreshed every six hours, its 2,000mAh battery could last up to three months.
The display’s circuit board is powered by the XIAO ESP32-S3 Plus and compatible with ESPHome, allowing seamless integration into smart home systems. It also supports the Arduino IDE, a familiar tool for many tech enthusiasts. Moreover, the display is part of the TRMNL BYOD ecosystem, offering over 375 plugins and eight layouts, reducing the need for extensive programming.
Measuring 7.5 inches with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, this display does not support colors. However, it utilizes the XIAO ESP32-S3 to enable data transfer via WiFi or Bluetooth, making it a versatile tool for smart home applications.
This latest development provides an exciting opportunity for tech enthusiasts and smart home users to enhance their setups with a long-lasting, versatile display solution.
