Affordable AI Chip Rentals in China: NVIDIA’s Offer Starts at Just $6/Hour

NVIDIA’s AI GPU rental services are experiencing a surge in popularity in China. Small-scale Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) in the region offer AI chips at a significantly lower rental cost compared to rates in the US. As the buzz around AI grows in Chinese markets, the region has discovered clever ways to bypass US sanctions, with renting AI GPUs emerging as a noteworthy loophole.

It appears Chinese AI engineers are finding innovative methods to access NVIDIA’s high-performance chips. They collaborate with international brokers and use cryptocurrency for transactions to preserve anonymity. Now, according to The Financial Times, Chinese CSPs have jumped into this lucrative business, offering their hardware for rent at remarkably low prices. For instance, renting an AI server outfitted with eight NVIDIA A100 AI GPUs costs merely $6 per hour in China. In contrast, a similar setup in the US would set you back around $10 per hour, highlighting a notable 50% price disparity.

Despite the US sanctions, NVIDIA’s H100 and A100 AI GPUs remain widely available in China. This accessibility is a key factor behind the reduced rental costs. A Chinese startup founder estimates that over 100,000 NVIDIA H100 AI accelerators are currently in the country. These GPUs are openly sold on popular Chinese e-commerce platforms like Xiaohongshu and Alibaba’s Taobao. Notably, due to their compact size, these chips are also smuggled across the nation.

The price of NVIDIA’s H100 in China ranges between $23,000 and $30,000, a significant reduction from the sky-high prices seen on the black market after the Biden administration imposed restrictions. Additionally, various Chinese companies are establishing subsidiaries abroad to acquire NVIDIA’s AI chips, effectively sidestepping US policies. Consequently, the sanctions seem to have had minimal impact on the market.

So, as China’s AI sector continues to flourish, the strategic workaround of renting NVIDIA’s GPUs is becoming a driving force in regional market expansion. This emerging trend highlights the resilience and adaptability of the Chinese AI community in the face of global trade restrictions.
