Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 17e, its newest budget-friendly iPhone, and the headline is simple: you’re getting a newer chip, a faster modem, and a brighter OLED display while the price stays put. The iPhone 17e arrives at $599, aiming squarely at buyers who want modern performance and Apple’s latest software features without stepping up to the flagship tier.
Design and display: the notch is still here
One of the biggest talking points is what Apple didn’t change. Despite prior chatter suggesting otherwise, the iPhone 17e sticks with the classic notch design introduced years ago, rather than adopting the Dynamic Island. The notch continues to house Face ID hardware and the front-facing camera.
On the front, you’ll find a Super Retina XDR OLED display rated for up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness, which should help with outdoor visibility and HDR content. Apple also includes the Action button, giving users quick access to tools like the flashlight and other shortcuts, including visual intelligence features.
Build quality is a strong point for the price: an aluminum frame is paired with a Ceramic Shield 2 front cover, which Apple says offers up to three times better scratch resistance plus improved anti-glare behavior. Color options include white, black, and soft pink.
Performance upgrades: A19 chip and a more efficient modem
The iPhone 17e is powered by Apple’s A19 chip with a 6-core CPU and a 4-core GPU, along with neural accelerators. Apple also highlights an upgraded 16-core Neural Engine designed to run large generative models more efficiently, boosting on-device AI performance and supporting Apple Intelligence features.
Connectivity gets a notable lift too. The iPhone 17e introduces the C1X modem, which Apple claims is up to 2x faster than the C1 modem found in the iPhone 16e, while using 30% less energy than the modem in the iPhone 16 Pro. Beyond speed and efficiency, the modem enables Apple’s satellite capabilities, including Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My via satellite.
Camera: one 48MP sensor, with practical versatility
On the back, the iPhone 17e uses a single 48MP Fusion camera, and Apple positions it as more flexible than “single camera” might sound. It supports an optical-quality 2x Telephoto experience, allowing you to frame tighter shots without the typical low-quality digital zoom look. Users can shoot at up to 48MP resolution, or use the default 24MP mode.
Apple also emphasizes smarter portrait capabilities: the phone recognizes people, dogs, and cats and automatically saves depth information so you can add background blur after the shot and adjust focus later in the Photos app. The newest HDR processing is designed to keep skin tones natural while balancing highlights, midtones, and shadows and preserving fine detail.
For video, the iPhone 17e records in 4K with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps. It also supports Spatial Audio for more immersive playback when paired with devices like AirPods or Apple Vision Pro.
Battery and charging: faster wireless and solid daily use
Apple promises all-day battery life, plus fast charging that can reach 50% in about 30 minutes. Wireless charging support includes MagSafe and Qi2, enabling up to 15W wireless charging—an improvement over older Qi wireless charging speeds that top out at 7.5W on some previous models.
Software and Apple Intelligence: iOS 26 and new protections
Out of the box, the iPhone 17e runs iOS 26 with Apple’s Liquid Glass UI design. It also supports Apple Intelligence features, including:
Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, plus support with AirPods
Visual intelligence tools that let you search, ask questions, and take action based on what’s on your screen
Call Screening, which can gather a reason for calls from unknown numbers, and Hold Assist, which can wait on hold for you until a live agent is available
Messages filtering that sends texts from unknown senders to a separate folder to keep your main conversations clean
Price, storage, and availability
Apple sets the iPhone 17e at $599 for the 256GB model, or $24.95 per month over 24 months in the US. Trade-in options can reduce the cost, with up to $100 credit for an iPhone 11 and up to $195 for an iPhone 13 (values depend on condition and eligibility).
Pre-orders start March 04, with in-store availability beginning March 11.
For shoppers looking for a newer iPhone with updated performance, meaningful modem and charging improvements, and the latest iOS and Apple Intelligence features—without jumping to premium pricing—the iPhone 17e is clearly positioned as Apple’s most cost-conscious new iPhone option at launch.
