Just a few years ago, the most expensive parts inside a flagship smartphone were usually the application processor and the camera hardware. Now, the balance is shifting in a way few people expected: memory and storage are becoming the real cost drivers, fueled largely by intense demand patterns across the semiconductor industry.
A well-known Weibo tipster, Digital Chat Station, says the combined cost of 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB UFS 4.1 storage for high-end phones has climbed so much that it now costs more than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. In other words, the memory and storage package inside a premium smartphone can now outweigh the price of the flagship processor that powers the device.
According to the tipster, by Q2 this 16GB + 1TB configuration crossed 2,300 yuan, which is roughly $334. For comparison, a current top-tier Qualcomm flagship chipset is often estimated around $280 per unit. That puts the RAM-and-storage bundle at about a 19% premium over the processor, an eye-catching milestone for anyone tracking smartphone component pricing.
The post also points to a bigger industry problem: supply constraints. When availability tightens, brands across the board can end up sourcing the same kinds of memory chips, whether they’re building ultra-premium models or more affordable mid-range phones. The knock-on effect is that price increases in one segment can ripple across the entire market. If expensive components like foldable displays become pricier, the pressure doesn’t stay isolated to foldables—other phone categories can be pushed upward as well due to shared supply chains and component competition.
There is, however, a silver lining for buyers who care most about specs. As component costs rise, manufacturers often try to justify higher retail prices by upgrading hardware configurations. That can translate into more phones launching with higher RAM and storage tiers as standard, along with additional premium features that brands can market as meaningful improvements.
Looking ahead, this pricing trend could also influence next-generation flagship chip costs. If upcoming processors continue to rely on LPDDR5X, costs may climb higher than recent generations, potentially pushing certain flagship chips beyond the $300 mark. Meanwhile, rumors suggest even more premium variants could add support for newer memory standards while still maintaining compatibility with existing options, giving manufacturers flexibility depending on pricing and supply.
